300 Series Boxcar Notes:
Twenty-four 300 series cars were scrapped during the 1913 purge of old equipment. These cars were small, 40,000 lbs. capacity, and completely worn out. If repaired and placed in service at great expense, they would continue to be subject to heavy repairs due to the handling with the heavy equipment then being operated. They would need to have trucks and body rebuilt, equipped with air brakes and all standards applied in order to comply with United States Safety Appliance Acts. This information is from a letter to G.E. Norris, Supt., from C.P. Coleman, Car Accountant, dated November 2, 1912. |

700 Series Boxcar Notes:
REBUILT - In addition to new continuous metal draft members, serviceable parts such as trucks, brake equipment, truss rods, safety appliances, couplers and draft gears, also some sills and other sound wood from the frame of the old car were used. In every case all of the siding, floors, and not less than 2/3 of the balance of the lumber, including sills in the new cars, consisted of new material. The trucks of the old cars were overhauled and wood spring plank replaced with steel channel. This information is from a memo dated November 8, 1927 found in the M&PA files. Classification of these cars was authorized by the ICC under ARA Rule 112. 720 was insulated and equipped for Passenger Service. Used as an emergency milk car. "Load to M&PA only" was stenciled on 700 series cars in 1929. |

1000 series cars were built by the Western Steel Car and Foundry Co., cost $1,120.00 each and had a capacity of 50 tons. Painted Mineral Brown. 1100 series cars were built by the Baltimore Car and Foundry Co., cost $1,234.30 each and had a capacity of 40 tons. 1000 and 1100 series cars had new steel ends applied in 1928 and 1929 and were equipped with steel side frame trucks in 1936 and 1937. |

1150 Series Boxcar Notes:
1150 through 1153 were accepted in settlement for cars 705, 707, 715 and 716 that were dastroyed on the PRR. PRR Class XLh. 1150 through 1154 received steel side frame trucks (Andrews?) in late 1936, early 1937. Later replaced with Arch Bar trucks. 1152 ended it's days with Bettendorf trucks. 1151 and 1152 were rebuilt in 1929. |
Notes on Frieght Cars
The Company's freight cars were probably not used in interchange service after about 1929 due to their weak and outmoded condition except for the 1000 and 1100 series which, being more "modern", were kept in interchange service thru 1939.
The following cars are known to have existed as flat cars during a portion of their existence. They retained their original numbers:
- M&PA 308 - June, 1909 to 1914
- M&PA 312 - December, 1907 to 1911
- M&PA 314 - April, 1911 to May, 1913
- M&PA 319 - ???? to May, 1913
- M&PA 323 - April, 1911 to May, 1913
- M&PA 333 - 1909 to January, 1913
- M&PA 334 - 1909 to May, 1913
- M&PA 335 - 1909 to May, 1913
- M&PA 603 - December, 1907 to May, 1911
From the Maryland Historical Society - The below companies, which built cars for the M&PA RR, were sold to William H. Grafflin on July 28, 1909 for $340,000. The shop was located in Curtis Bay on the B&O RR. The last cars were built about 1914.

John H. reported the following on April 2, 2010:
M&PA flat car #116 is listed as originally being Philadelphia & Reading 17289, and built in May 1903. Additionally, P&R 17289 started life as a class XMj box car that was built by American Car & Foundry on May 6, 1903. It was wrecked on June 17, 1919.
You have flat car #122 as originally P&R 14856. That car was also built by AC&F on October 1, 1906 for the P&R as a class XML box car and was wrecked in November 1919.
