From The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad in Miniature
A Tree Grows in Brookl......
Forest Hill!
by Eric Hoskins

The following are color images of several photographs which appeared in black and white in the article. Also included are additional bonus color shots. Due to space limitations, they were not included in the article.

Photo # 1:
Here is a re-creation of Richard Bradley's 1950 photograph recently published in the Fall of 2014 issue of the Timetable. Camera is facing railroad North. All of Smithson's Trestle #299 can be seen here. In the distance the station, hand car shed and a few buildings are seen.

Photo # 2:
A northbound #6, slowly steaming by E. Tucker's warehouse, and about to go over the grade crossing a few hundred feet to the North.

Photo # 4:
A daring photographer climbed the nearby tree to get this photograph. Just peeking out beyond the coal yard is Ma&Pa box car #728 tied down on the passing siding unloading goods into E. Tucker's warehouse.

Photo # 5:
This is a bird's eye view of Smithson's Trestle, #299. Partially visible through the trees is Sinclairs. Note the turnout for the two sidings and the target switchstand. (The drainage pipe under the roadway is the flexible part of a straw). Note the detail that the author modeled as seen from this angle.

Photo # 6:
EMC gas-electric #61 headed southbound just about to arrive at the station. The coal bins and livestock chute can be seen in this photograph as well.

Photo # 7:
This is a northbound view of the c.1914 Forest Hill station, covered milk platform, tool shed & privy. Note the freshly delivered railroad ties lying in the yard. Note the spur in the background leading downgrade with a few boxcars tied down.

Photo # 8:
We just missed a southbound freight passing through the intersection of Rocks Rd and Jarrettsville Rd. Being it's a small town with short trains, only a few people were inconvenienced by having to stop for the crossing. Note the goods in the store window. Partially visible in front of the B&O covered hopper is a Pennsy covered hopper. I placed this in the consist for Russ Vollmer whom has graciously shared his knowledge and stories of the railroad with me. Along with the Ma&Pa, Russ and his son Dave are big Pennsy fans.

Photo # 10:
Compare the historic photo #9 to the modeled scene in photo #10, below. The author has captured the moment quite well, even to the kids on their bikes!

Photo # 11:
The photographer chanced their fate once again and scaled a tree across the road to capture lumber being unloaded and northbound #62 approaching Forest Hill station. Partially visible is the stock chute and livestock pen off Sinclair's storage building.

Photo # 12:
Looking up Jarrettsville Road. The 10 foot tall stone retaining wall is to the left with the station above it. To the left are Sinclair's fuel pumps.

Photo # 13:
Southbound train 32 being pulled by engine #41, passing through Forest Hill, Maryland. I used engine #41 and the WM covered hopper in this consist for Roger Huber, who has taught me nearly everything I know about the Ma&Pa. He has guided me to select the kits and models to enable you to make each one of the locomotives, cabooses & freight cars. Roger's favorite engine is #41, and he loves the WM railroad and their loooong coal trains.

Photo # 17:
Re-creation of Neal Scheve's 1950 photograph recently published in the 2015 Ma&Pa calendar. Southbound #6 is about to stop at the station to pick up 3 Catholic Sisters which are headed down to the Cathedral in Baltimore. (This picture was taken by using a mirror on the tracks).
